Baseball America posted their list of potential breakout prospects for the 2021 season, with Mason Martin and Braxton Ashcraft listed for the Pirates.
These two players were two of the sleeper candidates that I submitted. I chose Martin due to his power potential, and the adjustments he’s been making with his plate patience and approach to contact. I chose Ashcraft due to the big frame and future potential of his stuff, based on the limited views we’ve had prior to the shutdown. I’d probably go with Eddy Yean as the bigger sleeper candidate if I’m picking today, but my pick was before Yean was acquired.
Other BA links of note:
**I did a feature on Quinn Priester for this months magazine, looking at how he continued his development in 2020. The way Priester approaches these types of situations, and his ability to manage his development on his own in a highly positive direction, has me very high on his future chances.
**I wrote about the fresh perspective that John Baker is bringing to the Pirates, and how his position will be different from previous farm directors.
**If you missed it from last month, here was my feature on Nick Gonzales, who could be on a fast track due to his hitting tools.
