Winter Leagues: Santiago Florez Makes His Winter Debut

In Colombia on Sunday, 20-year-old right-handed pitcher Santiago Florez made his winter debut and tossed a scoreless inning on one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Florez hasn’t been allowed to pitch in winter ball until this year. The Pirates have him under the watchful eye of Jose Mosquera, who was slated to be the manager of a DSL Pirates affiliate this year after scouting with the Pirates over the previous few years in Colombia. Florez was the #21 prospect in the system coming into the 2020 season. He’s one of the top prospects in the system who will be available in the upcoming Rule 5 draft.

Francisco Acuna went 1-for-5 with a single in his second game of the season. He went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in the opener.

In Mexico, Fabricio Macias finished the game as a defensive replacement in center field without getting an at-bat. He is now hitting .247/.287/.342 in 27 games, with five doubles, two triples, one homer, 4-for-4 in steals and a 3:23 BB/SO ratio.

No action in the Dominican on Sunday, but that should change tomorrow with two teams scheduled to return to action after missing ten days due to some positive COVID tests.

Beau Sulser will pitch in Australia this year. He will play for the Perth Heat alongside 2019 Altoona teammate Robbie Glendinning. Sulser is currently under quarantine after recently arriving in Australia. Here’s an article on his arrival from the team’s website, which includes a broken mattress in his hotel room…
