Winter Leagues: Stephen Alemais Debuts; Macias Picks Up Two Hits

On Wednesday night in the Dominican, Stephen Alemais made his winter debut. He started at second base and batted eighth for Leones del Escogido. Alemais went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. We talked to him last month about playing winter ball this year.

Free agent Socrates Brito went 0-for-4 with an RBI in his second game of the winter. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his season debut.

Gregory Polanco faced live pitching on Tuesday and said that’s he’s physically ready to play winter ball, but he needs to do a little more live practice before he’s ready for actual games. His winter debut should happen soon. He hasn’t played in the Dominican since the 2013-14 off-season.

In Mexico, Fabricio Macias went 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and an RBI. As a side note, the winning pitcher for his team was former Pirates prospect Eduardo Vera, who allowed one run over seven innings. Macias is now hitting .292/.343/.446 in 20 games, with six extra-base hits and four steals in four attempts.

Randy Romero was used as a pinch-runner. He didn’t do anything on the bases, but he played two innings on defense in left field. He is 2-for-9 with a walk (no strikeouts) and a stolen base in 14 games.
