The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Nick Tropeano ahead of Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. To make room on the roster, Nick Mears has been optioned to the Alternate Training Site in Altoona.
Tropeano was acquired via waivers on August 11th from the New York Yankees. He has pitched parts of five seasons in the majors, though he has yet to make an appearance this year. He had a very brief stint in the majors last year with the Los Angeles Angels, posting a 9.88 ERA in 13.2 innings. His best success came in 2016 with the Angels, when he made 13 starts and posted a 3.56 ERA. In 217.1 big league innings, he has a 4.51 ERA, a 4.95 FIP, a 1.39 WHIP and a 193:87 SO/BB ratio.
Mears made three appearances for the Pirates this year. He has allowed two runs in 3.1 innings, with four strikeouts and seven walks. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent in August of 2018 out of college and topped out with a brief stint (five innings) at Altoona last year.
