Pirates Reach Agreement with Free Agent Pitcher Jandel Gustave

Last night we heard that the Pittsburgh Pirates deal with veteran pitcher Henderson Alvarez fell through. Alvarez mentioned on Twitter that the Pirates decided to sign someone else. It appears that the someone else is free agent reliever Jandel Gustave, according to Robert Murray, who notes that the deal is pending physical.

The 27-year-old Gustave is a right-hander, who was signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in 2010 out of the Dominican Republic. He made the majors in 2016 for 14 games, posting a 3.52 ERA in 15.1 innings. He pitched briefly for the Astros in 2017 as well, then after missing all of 2018, he pitched well for the San Francisco Giants in 2019. Gustave had a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 24 innings over 23 appearances. He was designated for assignment on August 3rd and elected free agency last Monday.
