Alvarez has plenty of big league experience, though not much recently. Since 2015, his big league time consists of three starts for the 2017 Philadelphia Phillies. The 30-year-old Alvarez spent his first five seasons (2011-15) in the majors with the Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins as a starter. He has a career 3.82 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 577.2 innings over 95 starts, with a 140:302 BB/SO ratio. Since his last big league appearance, he has pitched for two different independent league teams, two winter league teams, the Washington Nationals (in Triple-A) and in Mexico. His last team, the Milwaukee Milkmen, was a very brief stint in the American Association this year (indy ball).
