OOTP: Pirates Opens a Series Against the Mets

The following is part of our simulation of the 2020 Pittsburgh Pirates season, using Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP). We simulate the season each day, as it was originally scheduled, and with no input from any of us, all to give you a Pirates team to follow this year. You can follow the simulation by inning and make it seem like a game, or you can skip to the end and find out what happens.

The Pirates made some moves during their off day. They designated Andrew Susac for assignment and purchased the contract of John Ryan Murphy.

Mitch Keller takes the mound tonight, opening a series against the Mets.


1st Inning

Dyson singled to start the game. He stole second on a 2-2 pitch, then scored on an RBI single by Frazier. Josh Bell hit a two run homer. Newman grounded out to short. Polanco struck out. Hayes walked. Heredia walked. John Ryan Murphy singles through the hole on the left side, loading the bases. Mitch Keller reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring a run. Dyson drew a walk, bringing in another run. The Mets turn to right-handed pitcher Brad Brach, who gets Frazier to pop out to short.

Rosario grounds out to short. Keller walks Nimmo. Conforto strikes out. Pete Alonso hits a two run homer. McNeil doubles. Ramos strikes out.

Pirates 5, Mets 2

2nd Inning

Bell strikes out. Newman grounds out back to the mound. Polanco is hit with a pitch. Hayes draws a walk. Heredia grounds into a 5-4 fielder’s choice.

Marisnick is hit with a pitch. Guillorme draws a walk. Davis strikes out looking. Rosario strikes out swinging. Nimmo grounds out to first.

Pirates 5, Mets 2

3rd Inning

Robert Gsellman enters to pitch for the Mets. Murphy grounds out to short. Keller grounds out to short. Dyson grounds out to second.

Keller retires the side in order with three ground outs.

Pirates 5, Mets 2

4th Inning

Frazier singles to center. Bell flies out to right. Newman walks. Polanco strikes out. Daniel Zamora comes in to pitch and strikes out Hayes.

Ramos draws a walk. Marisnick triples, scoring Ramos. Keller strikes out the next three batters.

Pirates 5, Mets 3

5th Inning

Heredia and Murphy ground out, and Keller strikes out.

Nimmo grounds out. Conforto strikes out. Brandon Waddell comes on to pitch. Alonso grounds out to short.

Pirates 5, Mets 3

6th Inning

Dyson strikes out. Frazier doubles to left. Jeurys Familia comes in for the Mets. Jos Bell walks. Newman strikes out. Polanco walks to load the bases. Hayes strikes out.

Waddell retires the side in order, with two strikeouts and a ground out.

Pirates 5, Mets 3

7th Inning

Heredia grounds out to second. Justin Wilson enters in relief for the Mets. Murphy strikes out. Bryan Reynolds enters as a pinch hitter and strikes out.

Michael Feliz comes on to pitch in the seventh and strikes out the side in order.

Pirates 5, Mets 3

8th Inning

Seth Lugo takes over for the Mets in the eighth. He strikes out Dyson and gets Frazier and Bell to fly out.

Nimmo singled through the hole on the right side of the infield. Conforto flew out to center. Alonso strikes out and Nimmo is thrown out at second on the play. John Ryan Murphy is elected into the Hall of Fame immediately.

Pirates 5, Mets 3

9th Inning

Newman grounds out to short. Polanco strikes out. Dellin Betances enters the game. Hayes walks. Heredia strikes out.

Nick Burdi comes in to attempt to set up an easy save for Keone Kela. Burdi strikes out the first two batters, then gives up a single to Marisnick. Guillorme singles. Dominic Smith enters as a pinch hitter and singles on a fly ball to right-center, loading the bases. Keone Kela enters the game. Rosario flies out to right.
